Officials

A large number of officials are required to conduct a swim meet, and all of the positions, with the exception of timers, require training and certification, which is provided throughout the year. The following brief descriptions describe the training requirements and responsibilities of the various officials. Please contact Bruce Telford by email if you would like more information about becoming an official. Additional information can also on the Officials Page of the VSI website and in the Officials Recruiting Booklet.

Referee -
Job Description: Responsible for supervising officials at a meet and ensuring that all rules are observed

Training Requirements: Certified as a starter, recommended by Regional Officials Chair, pass written test, complete on-the-job training.

Starter -
Job Description: Ensures that all swimmers have a fair start

Training Requirements: Certified as a stroke and turn official for one year, pass written test, complete on-the-job training

Stroke and Turn Judge -
Job Description: Observe the swim, turns, and finishes of the swimmers for compliance with the technical rules of swimming

Training Requirements: Attend clinic, pass written test, complete on-the-job training

CTS Operator -
Job Description: Runs the electronic timing system at meets, usually a Colorado Timing System (CTS)

Training Requirements: Attend clinic, pass written test, complete on-the-job training

Timing Judge -
Job Description: In consultation with the referee, determines the official time for a swimmer

Training Requirements: Attend clinic, pass written test, complete on-the-job training

Recorder -
Job Description: Records the official time for swimmers and publishes the results

Training Requirements: Attend clinic, pass written test, complete on-the-job training

Clerk of Course -
Job Description: Seeds swimmers into correct heats. Ensures that young swimmers make it from the clerk of course are to the starting blocks

Training Requirements: Attend clinic, pass written test, complete on-the-job training.
